Eye Conditions

Many of us, at one time or another, have had problems with our eyes. While not all eye conditions require a visit to an eye doctor and go away on their own, it’s important to visit an eye care specialist on an annual basis. As we age, some of us find our vision isn’t what it used to be. Even if you’ve always had perfect vision there are things you can do to maintain good eye health.

We have listed some common eye conditions to help you find out if any of them sound familiar. If you’re experiencing any of these conditions, and symptoms aren’t going away, be sure to make an appointment with one of our eye doctors as soon as possible. Some conditions left untreated, could lead to more serious problems. Remember, early detection is very important.

Common Eye Conditions

Some of the most common eye conditions can be diagnosed and treated at First Eye Care Downtown Dallas. They include:

  • Amblyopia (Lazy Eye) – Commonly called “lazy eye,” amblyopia can be treated successfully if detected early enough in childhood.
  • Astigmatism – Often mistakenly called “stigmatism,” this common vision problem can be corrected with eyeglasses, contact lenses or refractive surgery.
  • Computer Eyestrain – Computer monitors, televisions, smart phones, tablets and other digital devices emit blue light from their screens which, when exposed for long periods of time, can lead to various vision problems.
  • Dry Eye Syndrome – Also known as Ocular Surface Disorder, dry eye syndrome is characterized by the breakdown in the quantity or quality of tears that are produced to cleanse, moisten, and protect the eyes.
  • Eye Allergies – are you bothered by red, itchy eyes? You may have allergies.
  • Eye Floaters and Spots – “Floaters” are usually normal and harmless. However, if you notice a sudden increase in floaters or floaters accompanied by flashes of light, see your eye doctor immediately.
  • Farsighted (Hyperopia) – Also called farsightedness, hyperopia is a common vision problem that can cause headaches, eyestrain and trouble reading.
  • Nearsighted (Myopia) – Also called nearsightedness, myopia is a very common vision problem, affecting up to one-third of the U.S. population.
  • Ocular Migraine Headaches – This condition is characterized by visual disturbances accompanied by a headache.
  • Photophobia – If you have light sensitive eyes, you might be experiencing photophobia.
  • Pingeucula and Pterygium – These common conjunctival degenerations can cause increased eye redness and produce ocular discomfort.
  • Pink Eye (Conjunctivitis) – Also known as conjunctivitis, pink eye is a very common infection or inflammation of the conjunctiva – which is the thin membrane that covers the surface of the eye and inside of the eyelids. Pink eye is caused by bacteria, viruses, allergens, and other irritants and it is highly contagious.
  • Ptosis – Ptosis is a drooping eyelid. Surgery is usually required to correct this problem.
  • Styes and Chalazion – These common problems are usually caused by infected or inflammed glands in the eyelids. Learn about prevention and treatment.
