Myopia Management

What is Myopia?

Myopia, or nearsightedness, is a common vision condition in which distant objects appear blurry and out of focus, but near objects are clear.

The causes of myopia are both genetic and environmental, and when untreated or undertreated, it can cause self-esteem issues and learning difficulties.

What are the risks of Myopia?

The rates of myopia are growing at an alarming rate – especially among children – and this is more than just a vision issue, it is a major health issue.

Many patients and parents view myopia as a simple inconvenience, but it is much more than that. It can lead to increased risk of serious vision complications, including:

Methods to SLOW Myopic Progression

Myopia progression can be slowed or halted in age-appropriate children with a few methods: specialty contact lenses such as MiSight 1 day or orthokeratology, and atropine therapy, to name a few.

MiSight 1 day Soft Lenses

MiSight 1 day are the one and only FDA-approved soft contact lenses to slow the progression of myopia in age-appropriate children. These lenses use alternating vision correction zones and treatment zones, represented by the two different shades of purple in the diagram. In reality these zones are clear and only shown in color on this diagram to convey the treatment method. This design allows the patient to see clearly, while providing long-term benefits.

Orthokeratology

Orthokeratology, or ortho-K, lenses are rigid contact lenses designed to treat myopia overnight. In the morning, these lenses are removed, and your child can see clearly all day long without daytime contacts or glasses. These lenses are specially designed to allow oxygen to pass through them during sleep and are FDA approved for safe overnight wear.

Ortho-K lenses reshape the cornea overnight to produce clear, crisp vision:

Orthokeratology

Atropine Therapy

Atropine is an anticholinergic eye drop, which in low concentrations has been shown to slow myopic progression with minimal side effects. Although in low doses Atropine has minimal side effects, patients have had rebound myopic progression after the medication has been discontinued. Therefore, our doctors only recommend Atropine for myopia management as a supplemental treatment for patient’s whose myopia is still progressing with one of the other methods listed above.
